The newly released preview includes Saman’s own voice through original audio recordings recovered as part of a sensitive documentary reconstruction. It also features testimony from her brother Haider, a key witness in the investigation into her disappearance and death.
The series will be available exclusively on HBO Max at a date to be announced.
The documentary opens in the countryside surrounding Novellara, in northern Italy, where an unmarked Carabinieri vehicle approaches an abandoned farmhouse. A man in handcuffs points towards a pile of debris. At a depth of around two metres, investigators uncover human remains later identified as those of 18-year-old Saman Abbas.
For 566 days, between 2021 and 2022, Saman’s whereabouts remained unknown. The last known images of her alive were captured by the surveillance cameras of the agricultural company where her father worked. The footage showed the young woman leaving her home at night with her parents.
Known online as “Italian Girl”, Saman had rebelled against an arranged marriage and openly pursued a relationship with another young man. The docuseries reconstructs her struggle for independence, the family and cultural pressures surrounding her, and the investigation that ultimately led authorities to discover her body.
The docuseries is produced by Aurora TV, with Giannandrea Pecorelli and Benedetta Fabbri serving as producers and Giulia Cerulli as executive producer.
The series was created by Lorenzo Avola and Carmen Vogani and written with Simona Coppini. Francesca Mazzoleni directs the first two episodes, while Gianluca Santoni directs the third.Emanuele Pasquet serves as director of photography, with editing by Simone Mele. The original score is composed by Lorenzo Tomio and Maddalena Pasqua, while Simonetta Amenta oversees general production management.
