BBC Studios has secured two further deals for Montreux Film and Fjernsyn’s comedy gameshow format Nation’s Dumbest, with broadcasters in Hungary and Denmark set to air local versions. RTL Hungary and TV2 Denmark are the latest partners to take up the format, as Nation’s Dumbest continues to build momentum globally, with more territories set to be announced soon. In Denmark, TV2 has ordered an eight-part series, produced by BBC Studios Denmark Productions. The show has already been recorded and is set to air later this year. In Hungary, RTL is preparing their own local version of the hit format, with filming scheduled for late summer 2026.
The new agreements follow standout performance for Nation’s Dumbest in existing markets. In France, the show, produced by BBC Studios France Productions, has become the #1 unscripted title of the year to date. Launching on TF1 as the most-watched programme of the day, it delivered a peak audience of 4.6 million viewers and a 24.7% market share across its opening night.
The format has since ranked as the highest-rated new format launch in France since 2020 and the biggest unscripted debut since 2022, outperforming a range of well-established entertainment brands.
In Sweden, the format was the #1 new entertainment launch of the year with the premiere drawing more than 1.1 million viewers for TV4.
Its returnability is also proving a key strength, with a second season currently in production in Sweden and a third season set to air this autumn in its originating market, Norway.
Nation’s Dumbest flips the traditional competition format on its head as the gameshow that no one wants to win. A cast of celebrities take on a mix of physical and knowledge-based challenges, all aiming to be eliminated before the final and avoid being crowned the nation’s dumbest. Combining irreverent humour with universally relatable questions, the format offers a fresh take on primetime entertainment.
Sumi Connock, EVP, Global Creative Network and Formats, BBC Studios, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with RTL Hungary and TV2 Denmark to bring Nation’s Dumbest to new audiences. It delivers big, playful entertainment but also has real warmth—giving viewers a chance to see celebrities at their most human. That balance is proving key to its growing international appeal.”
