Brendan Fitzgerald has exited his role as CEO of Secuoya Studios, transitioning instead into a position focused on content sales within the group. At the same time, parent company Secuoya Content Group has restructured its operations, granting full operational independence to its Latin American division.
Fitzgerald took the helm of the Madrid-based studio in January 2024, following his tenure as Senior VP of International English-language Co-productions at Sony Pictures Television. His departure leaves open the question of future leadership at Secuoya Studios, with no successor announced so far.
As the production and distribution arm of Secuoya Content Group—led by Raúl Berdonés and Pablo Gimeno—the studio has played a central role in the company’s expansion. Its slate includes titles such as Zorro, Matices and El homenaje (both for SkyShowtime), Terra Alta (Movistar Plus+), and Los 39 (Prime Video in Latin America).
During his tenure, Fitzgerald prioritized the internationalisation of the studio’s output, aiming for 30% of its catalogue to be produced in non-Spanish languages by 2027. This strategy relied heavily on a network of international “pod” partnerships with creators and producers across multiple territories, leveraging Secuoya’s Madrid Content City as a production hub. Collaborators included companies and talent from Iceland, the UK, France, the US, Mexico and Argentina.
Going forward, Fitzgerald will support the company’s distribution efforts, working alongside Andrés Zamora in Madrid and Joana Porto in Miami.
In parallel, Secuoya has elevated its Latin American operations by granting them full autonomy. Daniel Hernández Bocanegra, who has overseen the region since 2018, will lead this newly independent unit. The move is designed to strengthen local production capabilities and respond more effectively to increasing demand for premium, locally-driven content in markets such as Mexico, Colombia and the US Hispanic sector.
The Latin American division will also benefit from the strategic guidance of Pierluigi Gazzolo, former CEO of ViX, who joined Secuoya’s board last year. His role will focus on development strategy, project selection, and expanding access to regional talent and partnerships.
While Secuoya has historically been active in Latin America through audiovisual services, it has recently intensified its investment in original content. Recent projects include the series Los 39, filmed in Colombia, and the feature La Corona, produced with international partners.
