Each episode of this moving but delicate programme follows a terminally ill person who, instead of receiving a last wish, chooses to give something unforgettable to their loved ones – a symbolic gesture, a long-planned surprise, or a deeply personal farewell. From the very first scene, the story revolves around this gift. It is the engine that sets everything in motion— and the emotional climax we build towards.
Along the way, we discover what motivates the giver: often a deep desire to leave a lasting memory, express love, or offer thanks before it’s too late. The program offers rare and intimate insights into what truly matters at the end – and reminds the audience to live while they can. So, it’s not a story about dying, but about living fully until the end.
Hosted by acclaimed actor Esben Dalgaard, who himself lives with terminal cancer, the series is infused with honesty, courage, and even humor. Esben’s openness allows for conversations rarely seen on television - he’s not afraid to ask uncomfortable or ‘wrong questions, and that creates both laughter and liberation.
The programme has been developed by DR’s Broad Culture & Factual Department, with DR Sales handling international distribution, and has already been awarded “Best TV Format in Development” by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). It should also be noted that the EBU’s Best Format in 2025 went to the German programme Magic Moves (ZDF), which features children with hemiparesis who attend a school of magic. ‘Feel-good formats’ are one of the most important trends of the moment, which is good news.
