FILM.UA to Feature Mavka. The True Myth and The Dam at AFM
FILM.UA Group unveils an early look at two major new projects at the upcoming American Film Market — the live-action fantasy "Mavka. The True Myth" and the zombie action film "The Dam.".  Despite the ongoing war, FILM.UA remains focused on developing distinctive stories that reflect Ukraine’s identity and resonate with audiences worldwide.

A live-action fantasy feature, "Mavka. The True Myth" provides a fresh take on authentic Ukrainian mythology. The story follows Mavka, a nymph from a mysterious forest Dark Lake, who must lure Lukian, a young biology student, to his doom. Instead, she falls in love with him, defying the mermaids determined to keep her bound to their dark world.

The film expands the universe of the record-breaking animated hit "Mavka. The Forest Song", which was released in nearly 150 countries and grossed over $21 million worldwide, becoming the most successful Ukrainian theatrical release of all time. The new live-action adaptation is developed by the same creative team, marking a major new chapter in the Mavka Universe. The film is set for domestic release in March 2026, with distribution already secured in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg through Splendid Film GmbH.

Set in a secret Soviet-era bunker buried beneath the Kakhovka Dam, "The Dam" follows a unit of Ukrainian soldiers led by a female fighter code-named Mara. After the dam’s destruction amid the ongoing Russian invasion, they uncover a Cold War-era laboratory where human experiments were once conducted. The horrifying consequences of those experiments — half-dead Soviet soldiers — are still lurking below. To survive and prevent the evil from escaping, the team must battle the zombies, confront their fears, and learn to trust one another.

The film continues FILM.UA’s “Heroines of the Dark Times” horror universe, launched with "The Witch. Revenge" in 2025 — a 14-week theatrical success that drew 358,000 admissions and earned $1.4 million at the Ukrainian box office.
