Horror Shows: Scare Tactics

Horror Shows: Scare Tactics
In the vast world of formats, in addition to the most popular genres and trends (dating shows, adventure reality...), there are others that are more niche but very interesting and well characterised (‘micro-trends’). These include 'horror shows' (i.e. formats based on horror film themes), with titles such as Killer Camp (The CW-ITV2), Dark Doubt (Nippon Tv) and - my favourite - Release the Hounds (ITV2, with one of the best subtitles ever: 'the dogs don't know it's a game').

Scare Tactics, which aired on the US cable channel Syfy from 2003 to 2013, belongs to this 'micro-trend', as it mixes candid camera with horror in a very original way, putting victims in terrifying situations, usually with cinematic special effects and make-up that recreate horror movie clichés (unlike other unscripted shows, Scare Tactics was shot and edited in a cinematic style).
During the 10 seasons that have been produced, all the typical situations of the genre have been touched upon: satanic sects, possessed children, dangerous psychopaths, but always blending horror with humour and irony.
Now the show is set to debut this autumn on the NBCUniversal-owned USA Network, from actor and filmmaker Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions shingle, produced in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Another reboot, sure, but a very interesting one: watch the trailer below and catch up on the old episodes, they are worth it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk3FSA8TFN8
